2018 Round 1 Lucan April 8th Review
April 13, 2018
So the hard winter had past and the weather hadn’t been playing its part over the last few weeks, training hours were down but it was time to get back to racing.
Saturday 07-08-2018
The riders arrived in Lucan on Saturday all looking to get some practice in before the big day Sunday. The kids were styling it over all the jumps. The gate was set up it and the serious stuff started. The track closed around 4.30 once Lucan managed to get George Gordon off the track. Practice was done and the riders had to go home and wait till tomorrow.
Race Day
The sun was shining down on Lucan BMX the track was in mint condition, gazebos went up and the clubs and their families took their spots. Riders came from all parts of the country north, south, east and west. Open track session started and the riders had some time to shake off some nerves. Gate practice started for the young guns then the older Guys and Girls had some gate time.
Racing started at around 12.30pm “Bang and the gate dropped” with the under 6 riders taking to the gate some in their first ever National race. It was clear to everyone these kids weren’t messing around. There was banging bars and banging elbows and that was just Joey in the pens, the racing was close with positions changing on nearly every berm, we had lots of photo finishes on the line. As the racing went on you could see the riders that had put in the extra winter hours. We had big numbers in most age groups with 29 riders rocking up to the gate in the 9-10 age group. After moto 1 we had some strider fun, Mr Jackson took the few striders to the last straight for the event, every Strider rider went home happy with a shiny medal around their neck and a smile on their face, oh and a lolly pop in the mouth.
Moto 2 and 3 went ahead and so many riders stood out, too many to name. We had a few spills on the track just to keep the first aid crew on their toes. Break time arrives after moto 3 and the hot dogs and pot noodle were flying out of Lucan’s tuck shop. After food and hydration it was time to run the semi-finals, they all went well till Bennett and Jackson decided to have a dead heat and they had to have a run off to decide on the final place.
Ok, so it was final time, first of all the riders who took place were all winners on the day. The racing was fast and smooth from the age of 4 upwards these riders made it look so easy, the most spectacular riders of the day went to the Superclass, I struggled to see their front wheel touch the ground at all, wow it was great to watch them racing. All the results of the day are here on BMX Ireland page…
“So that’s a wrap” Roll on next the next National it’s a double header in Lisburn on the 12th-13th May hope to see you all there.
We would like to give a big thank you to so many people, first of all the riders then Lucan BMX Club, BMX Ireland and their race team, the First Aid team at the ready and Richie and Aidy for their outstanding race commentary bouncing off each other all day. Everybody who helped out and of course all the Family and Friends who turned up on the day to cheer on the riders. Many thanks to the photographers who spent time taking photos and posting on FaceBook, take a look below.
